The LPGA’s Evian Masters was played last week in France, and that means that the Women’s British Open, a major on the LPGA Tour, is being played this week. I mean, that’s the way the schedule always works.
Only not so much this year. You see, there is a little athletic competition being held in Great Britain now called the Summer Olympics. And the Summer Olympics will overwhelm and dwarf any other sporting event.
So the folks at the LPGA and the Women’s British Open made a smart move. Rather than get lost in a sea of gold and silver and bronze, the women’s golf tour decided to simply delay the major championships. This year the event will be played Sept. 13-16 at Royal Liverpool (Yeah, yeah, yeah).
But this might give us some idea of what the LPGA schedule will look like when the Evian Masters becomes a major next year. The LPGA won’t want to hold the Evian and the Women’s British back-to-back as majors. So the Evian is likely to move to a fall date, with the British Open staying with it traditional summer date with no Olympics to compete against.
For now, the LPGA can look forward to a major at Royal Liverpool (Yeah, yeah, yeah) and not getting drowned out by the noise of a London Olympics.
